Eine überdimensionalen Fußmatte liegt vor dem Eingang des Kumu Nationalmuseums. Um zum Museum zu gelangen muss man einen weit entfernte Treppe heruntergehen. Hier ist der Schriftzug „fri end“ noch deutlich lesbar. Nähert man sich der Installation lösen sich die Buchstaben in eine flimmernde grün-schwarze weiße Masse auf.
Das getrennte Wort „fri end“ verweist auf das historisch angespannte / entspannte Verhältnis zwischen Deutschland und Estland. Die Verwendung der englischen Sprache macht das Kunstwerk gezielt international zugänglich.
An oversized doormat lies in front of the entrance to the Kumu National Museum. To get to the museum you have to go down a flight of stairs far away. Here, the lettering "fri end" is still clearly legible. As one approaches the installation the letters dissolve into a flickering green-black white mass.
The linguistic construct "fri end" refers to the historically tense / relaxed relationship between Germany and Estonia. The use of the english language makes the artwork pointedly internationally accessible.
