„Die Silhouette eine Palme aus schwarzem Gummi liegt auf dem postapokalyptisch anmutenden Skelett eines Liegestuhls. Die Palme gibt sich ganz und gar der Schwerkraft hin, sie würde sofort zu Boden fließen, wäre da nicht ein Cocktail-Spieß, der dafür sorgt, dass sie am Rahmen des Liegestuhls hängen bleibt. So aber wird die Palme an ihrem Platz gehalten, auf dem sie so tut, als könnte sie ihre Funktion als Liegefläche eines Liegestuhls noch erfüllen. Dabei ist es ganz offensichtlich, dass diese Liegefläche bei der geringsten Belastung nachgeben und zu Boden sinken würde. Franziska Opel beschäftigt sich in ihrer Installation „Lazy days“ mit der Ambivalenz des Skulpturalen und materialisiert dabei ein paradoxes, fast perverses Verhältnis zu dem, was wir „Freizeit“ nennen." "The silhouette of a palm tree made of black rubber lies on the post-apocalyptic seeming skeleton of a deck chair. The palm tree completely surrenders to gravity: it would immediately flop to the ground, were it not for a cocktail stick that ensures that it remains suspended on the frame – but this is how the palm tree is held in place, where it maintains the illusion that it can still fulfil its function as the surface of a deck chair. Yet, it is quite obvious that upon attempting to lie down on it, this surface would give way and sink to the ground at the slightest strain.
In her installation "Lazy days" Franziska Opel deals with the ambivalence of the sculptural, materialising a paradoxical, almost perverse relationship to what we call leisure time." Text excerpt Magdalena Grüner
